Seeing Red

For the last month, our energy has been focused on changing the heart of our house - the kitchen. As you can see in the pictures, the kitchen literally resembled a heart. Red everywhere. Forget retro, this kitchen was just too bold, outdated, and dingy for us.

Nonetheless, Ian and I saw its potential and just how spectacular this room could be.

First, the layout is very practical. All the appliances were placed in a functional format. We've watched HGTV shows where couples complained about moving into a house where the sink wasn't next to the dishwasher or the refrigerator was in some awkward location across the kitchen.

Second, the kitchen island is huge and acts as a statement piece. It includes a 36inch gas range and a custom designed ventilation system, directing steam and smoke outside of the house.

Third, the amount of cabinet storage is fantastic. And the cabinets themselves are in decent shape. We knew we could save so much money by painting them versus replacing. We also have a good size walk-in pantry that can hide food and cooking gadgets.

Fourth, the size of the room is ideal, and it's open the rest of the house. There is plenty of natural light that comes through the windows, too.

So with all these pros, we are excited! We have developed a plan to update this kitchen with a look and feel that suits our style.

Here's the plan:
-Remove red tile countertops and backsplash
   -Install quartz countertops
   -Install new subway tile backsplash
   -Remove all existing appliances
   -Install top-rated stainless steel appliances
-Remove ultra large and heavy cast iron sink
-Install new sink, faucet, and disposal
   -Paint cabinets
-Remove and replace all hardware on cabinet doors
-Remove large fluorescent light on ceiling and replace with new fixture
-Remove the random spice rack placed on the side wall. Patch wall and paint.
-Paint all the wood trim, ceiling, and walls

It all sounds so easy on paper. But we quickly discovered this list equals a lot of labor! Stay tuned for our transformation ...
