Beveled Backsplash

We purchased Grecian subway tiles months ago. We kept the beautiful tiles hidden until we could muster up enough motivation to knock out the project. (We despise grouting)

Before we put up our backsplash,
Ian measured, cut, and hung backer-board so the tiles could adhere to a flat, waterproof surface. Then, when we had a full day to dedicate to the project, we got a crankin' !!

Grout is so messy. And it dries so quickly. You definitely need two people for this project. Once you start, there's no stopping until you lay the last tile (unless you want to waste the grout). Also, I wanted gray grout versus white, so that the tiles would be more defined. The white grout would have hidden our flaws better. So with the gray, we had to be extra meticulous.

Oh, and of course I chose tiles that have beveled edges, which results in harder grout lines to fill and more difficulty in cutting. But Ian used his wet saw to custom cut the tiles so nicely. He's definitely living up to his Bob Vila nickname.

I love the imperfections in the tile, and the random gray tones.

Even though these tiles came on a sheet, I cut them apart and placed them individually so I could get perfect straight lines.

Notice the difference on the right side with the gray grout ?

6 hours into our project...

Done! Now we just need a sink faucet, plate coverings for the outlets, and under-the-counter lighting!
