Shimmer Shimmer On The Wall

We've been working our butts off. But for Ian's 31st Birthday on Monday, we refused to look at the rooms under renovation! It was a dreary day, perfect for a morning stop at Krispy Kreme's, a mid afternoon movie date (go see Captain Phillips because Tom Hanks is superb), a twilight bike ride, and an evening dinner at home (oysters, filet, and bourbon oh my).

After a sweet day of relaxation, celebration, and libations we got right back into home improvement mode. In the months ahead, we know that our time together will be more limited. I will start commuting to Philadelphia, and Ian will start upgrade training (hello Captain Hamlyn)! So I've been really stressing that we knock out projects NOW before our careers get crazy again.

The status of our bathroom update has been a little stagnant simply because the darn drywall is the biggest pain in the arse to patch. Bless Ian's heart; he has put about 5 coats of compound on the walls over the last three weeks. He's been repairing the walls to make them flawless. While he has done an amazing job, this task has clearly shown us that next time a project calls for drywall installation, we will hire a professional.

But alas, this week, we primed and sealed the walls, then painted two coats of Sherwin William's Steamed Milk. The room looks ten times better, and now we can move forward with the rest of the to-do list.

Ian hung all new drywall next to the existing wall (still covered in wallpaper glue)

I'm estimating Ian has spent 15+ hours mudding, patching, & sanding the walls!

I'm applying Kilz, a primer and sealer, before we paint.

Paint polishes off this room. Still need crown molding around the doors and ceiling, a medicine cabinet, wall light, and sink vanity.

To me, the most unique feature of our bathroom is the window wall and built-in bathtub area covered in tile. I've envisioned pretty posh penny tile since we started this project. We just put it up, and now I'm even more blown away. It's really chic, shimmery, and luxe looking! Just great texture! We still have to grout and place tile around the tub. But before we can finish the entire area, we have to have our plumber hook up our fancy new faucet. Check out our progress...

This wall looked small, but it needed a ton of tile! We started in the afternoon, so this picture has a mix of natural and indoor lighting.

Now it's nighttime. We stopped tiling after running out of mortar and started painting. We've also ordered custom shutters/blinds for these large windows!

Daylight shadows. I love how it changes colors from different angles.
Again, we still have to grout and install molding around the edges.

This is the rest of the area we will tile (after the plumber fixes the faucet).

  1. YAY for Ian! So excited for you both! Let us know if we can help with anything in the coming months - we have lots of free time on our hands now that we aren't planning a wedding!
